Unison Battlefield Historic District
Neighbors and Friends: The National Park Service is now completing its history and mapping of the Battle of Unison, the three-day Civil War battle in November 1862 that is now seen by historians as much more significant than previously thought. Your property appears to be in this historic battlefield.
The nonprofit Unison Preservation Society (UPS) now seeks your support in putting the battlefield on the National Register of Historic Places and the Virginia Landmarks Register as an historic district.
As part of this process we are applying for a federal grant from the American Battlefield Protection Program (ABPP), part of the U.S. Department of Interior. If approved, the grant would cover much of the cost of creating this historic district.
We hope you will support our efforts to get the grant and to create the battlefield historic district by signing the accompanying petition.
IMPACT ON RESIDENTS: Creating this state and national historic district will NOT restrict property owners in any way, just as the Unison Village Historic District, created in 2002, has not placed any restrictions on what residents can do on or to their property.
